Meteoroids in space since Civil War return this summer
Science Blog -- The annual Perseid meteor shower is coming, and forecasters say it could be unusually good. The shower begins, gently, in mid-July when Earth enters the outskirts of a cloud of debris from Comet Swift-Tuttle. Dust-sized meteoroids hitting the atmosphere will streak across the night sky, at first only a sprinkling, just a few each night, but the rate will build. By August 12th when the shower peaks, sky watchers can expect to see dozens, possibly even hundreds, of meteors per hour.

Big Sun Spot!
There's a huge Sun spot (20x the size of the Earth) that's pointed directly at our planet...
At 20 times the size of Earth, the largest sunspot observed since the fall solar storm onslaught is now pointed directly at Earth. Its unusually large size also means that it's now visible with the naked eye (although you should never look at the Sun without a proper filter). The implications of this spot have scientists on the edge of their seats - if the active region generates coronal mass ejections (CMEs), massive explosions with a potential force of a billion megaton bombs, it will be a fairly direct hit to Earth and its satellites and power grids.

Shrimp Bandages See Wartime Use
Gizmodo -- It was a couple of years ago, at least, that we first heard about bandages being developed out of chitosan and now it seems they've been put into service in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Chitosan, derived from shrimp shells, carries a positive charge and bonds with a wound's red blood cells (which are negatively charged) to form a clot in as short as 30 seconds. Made exclusively by HemCon, the bandages use shrimp shells from Iceland, are processed and freeze-dried in New Hampshire, assembled and packaged in Oregon, and sterilized in California. No word on when shrimp bandages will be available to consumers.

When he was a boy growing up in Bonham, a town in Fannin County in North Texas, the era of the great trail drives was over, and he feared that the old ways of the cowboy were disappearing. However, the legend and myth of the cowboy was just beginning. Popular literature, art by Frederic Remington and Charles M. Russell, and the fledgling film industry promoted a romantic, yet often inaccurate, image of the cowboy. For his part, Smith resolved to honor the life of the cowboy by presenting as true a portrayal as possible.

FedEx tries out GM's hydrogen fuel cells

This FedEx truck, which is actually more of a FedEx van or FedEx MPV, was modified to hold the large fuel cell which provides a 250 miles range. It is the first hydrogen vehicle approved for public use in Japan. GM plans to sell hydrogen vehicles to the general public by 2010.

But if they were serious about it, they would have made it much easier to get, they would have updated it frequently, and they would have provided ISO images for download so anyone could burn CDs for anyone else...Read full article here

Air Conditioned Jacket
Gizmodo -- You know, you can find the damndest things when you clean out your email, like perhaps an air conditioned jacket from Japanese firm PC2B. It keeps you cool and makes you look like a bloated marshmallow man all at once. Perhaps you could just, you know, take off the jacket.

Bulk Data Storage For The Common Man?
Slashdot -- Lately, I have been looking into different bulk data storage options available to a common man. My work depends on generating, storing and analyzing a large amount of data -- averaging about 1 TB per month. I would like to have a storage system which is automated, fast, reliable and most importantly does not cost the price of an eye. Right now, I have a 4 node Linux cluster with 10 large hard disks (total capacity 1.6 TB); data storage roughly costs about $0.60/GB (excluding the cost of PC hardware). But long term storage is painful -- DVDs cost about $0.10-$0.15/GB but takes too much human time and leaving data on hard disks makes me nervous because of possible failures. RAID is a possibility, but it increases the cost significantly. I was wondering, if Slashdot readers have any recommendations for a cheap automated way to store and retrieve data.

An RSS Feed Directory Based on the Structure of the Open Directory Project

An Introduction to LEDs
Gizmodo -- IDFuel has a short introduction to one of our favorite diodes, the LED, providing a short history and "How It Works," as well as linking to some of the stalwart sites like LED Museum and DigiKey. What I didn't see, though, and was hoping to, were some inexpensive LED DIY projects. Until SolarBotics sends me a reprint of the BEAM instructions I've lost, I've got all this solder here and nothing to drip it on.

America's Heart & Soul
Disney -- America is a vast country -- three thousand miles from end to end. But it's not the land that makes America so special -- it's the people. Filmmaker Louis Schwartzberg packed up his camera and hit the road, with a goal of capturing both the unparalleled beauty of the land and the incomparable sprit of the people. Through his movie, "America's Heart and Soul," you'll have the chance to meet ordinary Americans with extraordinary stories. Louis's gift is his ability to connect with people, honestly capturing their values, dreams, and passion in an awe-inspiring journey that reveals the stories - unusual, captivating, inspiring and emotional - that make us into something more than a collection of individuals. "America's Heart and Soul" is a celebration of a nation told through the voices of its people. (via Yahoo Movies)
