How I (Finally?) Beat Spyware
Lockergnome Windows Fanatics -- This week, I took the upper hand. I vowed to eradicate the infestation, and at least for now, it looks like I have. Removing spyware isn't rocket science. But you have to be persistent. I made a lot of missteps and wasted plenty of time along the way. In hindsight, it's clear that I took three key steps...

Retrospect tip
Lockergnome OS X Fanatics -- Is the Retrospect program not running quickly enough for you? Perhaps you need to disable Norton Antivirus before running the “Duplicate” feature. One blogger did and he gained a huge performance increase for his trouble. According to Norm Nager who discusses this tip in his article, if you disable NAV before running Retrospect, you will shave off around 11 minutes from your disk cloning time.

Infinite Wednesdays
For the day that doesn't seem to end, the best in sci/fi and science

Leading to Lead
Scientific American -- Conflicting rules may put lead in tap water.

Device captures 'moving' sound
Science Blog -- A conversation snaps around you. A string trio plays in front of you as you turn your attention from cello to violin. A soprano walks across the stage, and you turn your head to follow her voice. Conventional sound recording cannot capture those experiences -- but an invention by audio engineers at the University of California, Davis is changing that.

Passive smoking danger was underestimated
New Scientist -- A new study examining the blood of non-smokers suggests the risk of coronary heart disease is much higher than thought.

A Buggy Cavity Fix
Popular Science -- Can genetically engineered bacteria cure tooth decay?

Photo of the Day
National Geographic -- After decades of darkness, the wolf is back, but under circumstances that are hardly natural. For eons wolves survived because they were fierce competitors; today they live because we want them to. People now wield the power to say: Let there be wolves. (New photo everyday)

Revisiting the Orion Nebula
Red Nova -- For astronomers, Orion is surely one of the most important constellations, as it contains one of the nearest and most active stellar nurseries in the Milky Way, the galaxy in which we live. Here tens of thousands of new stars have formed within the past ten million years or so - a very short span of time in astronomical terms.

Narnia Shoots In N.Z.
SciFi Wire -- The movie version of C.S. Lewis' beloved children's book The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe began shooting in New Zealand, the New Zealand Herald reported.

Apparently: 'These releases are designed to address early issues found in the new extension manager and automatic upgrade system as well as making changes to the new Firefox theme based on initial feedback.

TIP: A Quick Way of Sending Mail
Lockergnome Windows Fanatics -- E-mail is probably one of the things that most people use their computer for, whether it is for business or pleasure. So when you want to compose and e-mail, what do you do? Open up Outlook (if that's your mail client), and more than likely click the New button. This would open the Untitled Message window and you're off composing your message.

Digital Photography Tips
The Screen Savers -- Ultimately, it's all about control. If you want to step your work up a notch, take control of what you shoot. That said, you'll want to trade up to a camera where you can look right through the lens. This provides two immediate advantages. 1. You see exactly what you're going to shoot, not an approximation. 2. The shutter will fire precisely when you want it.

Gadget May Help Sleepers Choose Dreams
Yahoo! Tech News -- Ever wished you could decide what to dream at night?

SPY PEN USB Flash Drive with SD Card Reader
Gizmodo -- It's sad that these days, almost anything that refers to itself as a 'spy something' is probably pretty pedestrian when it's all said and done. So while this "SPY DISK with card reader" isn't amazing, it is surprisingly enough that it actually does something cool at all. Available with internal memory sizes of 128MB or 256MB, the cap-end also functions as an SD/MMC card reader. You can't copy directly from the SD cards to the internal memory -- you'll have to copy to your PC, then back -- but it's a pretty great idea in general, even if it doesn't shoot lasers or eject poison gas. And hey, it's USB 2.0! Maybe the cheap gear is finally starting to see the light of fast transfer rates.

CPU Scaling ATI’s and NVIDIA’s Best
[H]ard|OCP -- Wondering how ATI’s and NVIDIA’s latest video cards stack up on different platforms and CPU speeds? We use real-world gameplay in FarCry, Battlefield Vietnam, and Flight Simulator 2004 to find out just how much of a factor CPUs are in today's gaming.

Marlow Chamber of Commerce -- Saturday, July 3, "Marlow Grove" had its first community-wide Independence Day celebration on July 4, 1892, and continues the tradition to this day. Planned by the founder of Marlow, A. B. Smythe, with Bill Wade, "Ranchers donated beef, men of the community dug a barbecue pit, and made other preparations for a feast." The 2004 Independence Day Celebration will be kicked off with a parade at 9:15 a.m. Huge crowds gather each year to watch floats, horses, antique autos, antique tractors, Shriner's Clowns, and every entry in between. All groups who would like to participate with their organizations are encouraged to be in the parade, and individual entries are welcome also. At 10:00 p.m., as the grand finale of the evening, one of the largest fireworks displays in southern Oklahoma is enjoyed by the crowd in Redbud Park, as well as from the backyards and cars of thousands.

Chandra turns up the heat in the Milky Way center
Science Blog -- A long look by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory has revealed new evidence that extremely hot gas exists in a large region at the center of the Milky Way. The intensity and spectrum of the high-energy X-rays produced by this gas present a puzzle as to how it is being heated. The discovery came to light as a team of astronomers, led by Michael Muno of UCLA used Chandra's unique resolving power to study a region about 100 light years across and painstakingly remove the contributions from 2,357 point-like X-ray sources due to neutron stars, black holes, white dwarfs, foreground stars, and background galaxies.

Sugar is the new oil
Autoblog Home -- So a lot of attention is being paid to hydrogen fuel cells as an alternative to gasoline. But Dr. Stanley Kravitz of Sandia National Laboratories sees another route, which uses similar technology: fuel cells that harness energy produced by glucose, a basic form of sugar. Glucose is cheap and abundant, and unlike hydrogen, it doesn’t require larger
compounds to be broken down in order to access it. Glucose is a natural fuel for the human body and thus the conversion processes are quite well-known, leading Dr. Kravtiz to believe that “If evolution figured it out, we should be able to figure it out.” There are a few other companies working with glucose fuel cells as well, including one which has been issued a patent for its sytem. The reason we haven’t heard much about it is because of the technology’s woefully low efficiency, which will need to be raised a millionfold (literally) before it’s taken even remotely seriously.

Chair Fix
Gizmodo -- Oh, this is lovely, for real. I have a dirty secret. I recently discovered Ikea, and as someone who has lived their life spending the bulk of their money on gadgets and software, it was pleasing to know that I could purchase crappy pressboard furniture that actually looked sort of stylish, if only for a week or two before it starts to flake away. So this Chair Fix is like Ikea but even better, because it not only is made of relatively sturdy plywood (I'm so hard to impress, aren't I?), but it can be assembled without that little hex wrench -- no screws, just a few whacks with a mallet. Plus you can paint the board to your liking before popping out the pieces, and then have a matching piece of artwork for your chair.

Cheaper wastewater-fueled device produces more electricity
Science Blog -- Environmental engineers have removed and replaced one of the most expensive parts of their prototype microbial fuel cell and the device now costs two-thirds less and produces nearly six times more electricity from domestic wastewater. Earlier this year, the team was the first to develop a microbial fuel cell (MFC) that can generate electricity while simultaneously cleaning domestic wastewater skimmed from the settling pond of a sewage treatment plant. Now, they've shown that by modifying their original MFC to make it cheaper, they can also boost electricity production from about 26 milliwatts per square meter to about 146 milliwatts per square meter.

Typically, the domain itself (e.g. 'google.com') still resolves, but popular hostnames, like 'www.google.com' will not resolve. As a result, the web site is no longer reachable.

The effect appears to be world wide.

The new high-end systems miss the 3GHz mark that Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the company would achieve at last year's Worldwide Developers Conference, but Tom Boger, Apple's Director of Power Mac Product Marketing said it came down to a technology challenge that was bigger than they expected. Boger also said today that users shouldn't expect to see a PowerBook G5s before the end of the year because of the challenges of putting the G5 in a small enclosure.

D-Link DSM-320 Wireless Media Player
Gizmodo -- While it's one of the first wireless media players to come with 802.11g WiFi stock standard, a few usability hang-ups prevent PC Magazine's review team from giving the D-Link DSM-320 a better than average score. It's got all the media playback mojo you'd expect from these modern day VCRs (which are really just hardware front-ends to your computer's media collection), yet the file browsing has some serious limitations (like no 'play album' selections and a broken search algorithm), there is a single, obnoxious screen saver, and the streaming internet radio is limited to only AOL Radio, leaving behind the thousands of free stations of the web. Up the upside, the hardware is solid, with lots of I/O ports and a decent remote, and most of the issues software based, meaning there's no reason that D-Link couldn't fix them in the future. For $170, you could almost risk buying it now and trusting D-Link to patch the firmware later

Chipless Xbox Modding
www.kevinrose.com (of The Screen Savers) -- As many of you already know, it's possible to hack the Xbox without the use of a mod chip. This has been going on for some time now – but I'd say within the last six months or so, the tools have evolved to the point that almost anyone can do it regardless of their tech skillz. So for all of you afraid of soldering or opening your Xbox, this may be the method for you.

US gets Smart - cars

No it couldn’t be that. However the cute, yet miniscule, Fourtwo will get a redesign before it comes to the US. John Giljam, who according to his wife “has never had a single class in engineering”, designed and built the thing himself, and is now making the amphibian available to crazy, rich people everywhere. For $1.2 million, the 42-foot luxury motor home, which already features a kitchen, plasma TV, bathtub and king-sized bed, will be equipped with huge inflatable pontoons that pop out of the sides of the vehicle and somehow keep it from sinking. Former President Ronald Reagan Dies at 93

1911 - 2004

AP News -- Ronald Reagan, the cheerful crusader who devoted his presidency to winning the Cold War, trying to scale back government and making people believe it was "morning again in America," died Saturday after a long twilight struggle with Alzheimer's disease. "My family and I would like the world to know that President Ronald Reagan has passed away after 10 years of Alzheimer's disease at 93 years of age. We appreciate everyone's prayers," Nancy Reagan said in a statement.

Remarks by President Bush Upon the Death of President Ronald Reagan

THE PRESIDENT: This is a sad hour in the life of America. A great American life has come to an end. I have just spoken to Nancy Reagan. On behalf of our whole nation, Laura and I offered her and the Reagan family our prayers and our condolences.

Ronald Reagan won America's respect with his greatness, and won its love with his goodness. He had the confidence that comes with conviction, the strength that comes with character, the grace that comes with humility, and the humor that comes with wisdom. He leaves behind a nation he restored and a world he helped save.

During the years of President Reagan, America laid to rest an era of division and self-doubt. And because of his leadership, the world laid to rest an era of fear and tyranny. Now, in laying our leader to rest, we say thank you.

He always told us that for America, the best was yet to come. We comfort ourselves in the knowledge that this is true for him, too. His work is done, and now a shining city awaits him. May God bless Ronald Reagan.

Oklahoma free fishing days June 5-6
Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation -- What’s better than a day of fishing? Fishing for free with your friends and family, of course.

The Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Commission approved a resolution to designate June 5-6 as Free Fishing Days in Oklahoma. Oklahoma was the first state in the nation to offer free fishing days 22 years ago and have since been followed by dozens of other states that have established similar free fishing days.

"Free fishing days are a great opportunity to introduce family and friends to fishing," said David Warren, information and education chief for the Wildlife Department. “This is also a good time to acknowledge the tremendous economic impact that fishing has in our state. Oklahoma’s 774,000 anglers pump approximately $500 million into the state’s economy each year."

State fishing licenses are not required on the free fishing days, although anglers should note that local or municipal permits may be required on those days. Anglers must also follow all other fishing regulations.
